NYC is so unique. It is very important that you understand the culture of your 'neighborhood'.  There are over 500 different ethnicities living here.   You don't want to live in a 'noisy neighborhood' if you're a quiet person.  For the most part, we get along with each other just fine. It's best to work with an agent who's familiar with the neighborhoods.  Move based on your preferences, not just your budget. If you get five out of ten things ticked off on your list, you might just have found a win. Because NYC is a melting pot you're very likely to find several different people groups living in close proximity.  But that's not always the case, especially as you go further into the other four boroughs excepting Manhattan.
Each neighborhood in Manhattan has a different personality. The Financial District and Battery Park City are cookie cutters – doormen buildings with elevators and amenities. Tribeca is where the well to do live, almost ghost town. Soho, West Village, Greenwich Village, East Village, Lower East Side are filled with activities and character. The West Village being the most popular and the east village the most artistic. The Meat Packing District is where the partying begins. Chelsea is arguably the most expensive neighborhood.

Metropolitan New York

With the inception of gentrification prices have skyrocketed everywhere. The most expensive neighborhood is slowly going up for grabs. Gramercy and Flatirion District are more on the reserved side. Midtown West is the Theatre and Fashion District primarily loaded with tourist attractions, and Midtown East is more sedate. The Upper West Side is for the newly weds and East Side all the way up tend to be for the gentry.

Harlem is the new Midtown, and Columbia University and the hospitals are the hub of the Upper, upper west side. The fact that an apartment is available today doesn’t mean it will be there tomorrow. The more popular the neighborhood, the less likely. Fall and Summer are the moving months, and during the Winter you may receive incentives for moving. Because it’s so cold, no one wants to move. Landlords vary, and the more financial security and stability you can prove, the better your chances.

This is a very laissez-faire part of town.  It is considered the 'hippy' neighborhood.  People who are artistically inclined to music, the art scene, eclectic palette, funky shops and bars tend to gravitate to this neck of the woods.  It's a very dynamic area where creativity thrives.

People are very comfortable expressing themselves here. Tompkins Square Park is maybe the biggest park in the neighborhood.  It has a very big 'dog run' for you animal lovers. St. Marks Place is the shopping district in the neighborhood.  Cooper Square and Mermaid Inn are other famous places to hangout. This neighborhood has the most 'mini' parks splintered on almost every corner.

The most popular business district in the world is the New York City Financial District.  It is largely a high-rise building business community that goes dead at night. It is headquarters to a number of global offices, financial institutions and renowned landmarks.  These include:
  • The New York Stock Exchange
  • NASDAQ
  • The Federal Reserve Bank of  New York
  • The Federal National Hall Memorial
  • One World Trade Center
  • 9/11 Memorial Center
  • South Street Seaport
  • Wall Street
  • Bowling Green
  • The Bull Ring
  • Trinity Church
  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • The New York Police Museum
  • The Museum of Jewish Heritage

The FiDi Manhattan - Bull Ring downtown NYC - Tourist Attraction!

The financial district is all about doormen buildings with multiple amenities and a 'nice' price tag.  Residents normally head to the village or midtown for entertainment.  More recently, the community board has developed and instituted residential plans to make the area more 'sociable'.  High rise residential buildings now offer complimentary breakfast as a perk to attract new residents to the area; and supermarkets and a theater are a few things 'on the table'.  It is a very popular tourist destination.  The narrow streets are full and noisy during the daytime.  Thanks to the seaport, the nights are beginning to come alive.
